  • As i presented my pitch, particularly the part about the green screen that we were meant to use to turn that background into white, my teacher told me that there was no need to use the green screen because the college has a white screen - which makes things a lot easier for us. The only worrying thing about the white screen is the shadows that appear behind Sarene, but i guess we can manage it, in the editing - light up a bit the scene.

Synergy

Welcome back to our blog!,

The one key visual element that our group has chosen to link together the music video to our ancillary products is 'lighting' - the idea of lightness and darkness. One of the main reasons why we have decided to use this is because we believe that we can emphasis the progression of the artist 'conquering' and getting over her past situations through location and costume. Lightness can be linked with happiness and can also be seen as angelic and beautiful whereas darkness is linked with negativity and ugliness. 

The above photo is an example of a picture we could use as the album cover for the artist. It started off with a simple picture taken on one of the bridges in Central London. We purposely placed Sarene( the main artist) in the middle of the frame, surrounded by the general public so that she stands out. The point of this is that it looks like the main subject is the main focus amongst the busy day to day life in London

Here is an example of two edited photos which we could potentially use for our ancillary products




I deliberately edited the photos so that background is black and white, it gives a greyish effect and contrasts against the artist(light and dark put into practice). I personally prefer the second photo as i feel it emphasises light and dark more prominently as literally one side is dark and the other is light - this also signifies the progression of lighting. Similarly in the music video we will use lighting to convey the beautiful, nostaligic and happy moments of the characters life. This will be done by filming in locations that link to 'lightness' ( The sky gardens which is situated on the top floor of the walkie talkie building which shows the skyline of London, White walls/houses in nottinghill) and other well lit locations. This will differ from the darkness of our chosen locations such as the forest pathway.

Hopefully, the audience will be able to see the running theme of light from our promotional video to our ancillary products through location, props, costumes and other lighting techiques such as lense flares.

Analysis of the CD for our final song choice


  • We can instantly see a pattern of lines forming 4 faces of Estelle at different opposite sides- 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom
  • Gold coloured, fancy looking font; her name is placed at the top; medium size- very clear to recognise the artist's album.
  • The design is very girly and elegant (added some flowers around the faces), this means that it is mostly aimed at young females.
  • The image is the most eye-catching

16 posts at health check 1.  Great start Eunice - your hard work has paid off.  Some nice and detailed blog entries.  You are using ICT in interesting ways - good use of EMAZE, powtoon and Voki.
To improve:
1. Check your blog 9 - I can't get it to load properly - I think there may be a slide missing?
2. Finish post 13 - currently unfinished.
3. Do blog 14.
And this is purely for aesthetic reasons but can you change the music for your powtoon for question 7?  it's a Christmas song and doesn't really go with what you are talking about.

My Reflection


  • I feel that I'm progressing well with the blogging tasks compared to last year, due to the fact that now I have more experience in both working with blogger (and blogging itself) and more comfortable in working with a range of technologies. Probably I would give myself  a mark of 15/20. taking in account my use of  ICT and the level of detail.
Things to improve : 

  • Blog around 3-5 times per week 
  • Check my blogs after i post them (if the're working properly)

  1. I believe the strongest feature is the colours used in all 3 products : blacks, whites and greys. 
  2. The make up is also very similar in the 3 products. 
  3. Some of the locations in both music videos, are dark or use a dim light : that reflects on the album - a black background

REFLECTION

IN Comparison to last year, I believe that my blogging journey has involved alot more ICT. I have been able to use ICT to my advantage by using different websites to present my findings on researching music videos. However, I believe that I have not reached my full potential and there is alot more ICT features I can add to my blog to make it visually exciting to read as well as fun!. I can do this by exploring more ways of putting my findings together, maybe in a vlog styled video or a screen voice over. I have also successfully been able to give examples with all my work that I have posted so far.

Things to improve
1) Time Keeping: On the planning stage of my blogging journey I must schedule when I am going to write blogposts so I can keep up to date and not fall behind.

2) More detail: I believe when giving examples, I can maybe explore ideas with more detail so that the people that read my blog get an in depth understanding on what i am trying to explain

3) Use of ICT: I need to improve on my ICT features for the rest of my blog. I have to try to make sure I am not over using the same features alot otherwise it will  make my blog boring and repetitive.

Overall I give my blog a 11/20 - I still believe there is alot more room for improvement and this is only the beginning.

I believe that my progress with blogging have improved compared to last year as there are more deadlines involved. Therefore, meeting deadlines by keeping my blog tasks up to date, this would enable me to get a good grade. I have been using some technologies however, i believe that i can use more different ICT, such as: vlogs,camtasia or time toast. So far i would give myself 14/20
3 things i need to improve on are:

  1. More ICT
  2. More detailed blogs
  3. Add more screen grabs

Evaluation on lip sync video:

Music videos feature a number of shots for various reasons, to relate with the audience by expressing thoughts and feelings, but also to show the viewer what is happening. Certain shots that you would normally find in a music video include:
Very wide shot-- This is where he artist is shown visible(barely) but the emphasis is still on placing the artist in the location/setting.
Wide shot-- This is where the artist is shown taking up most of the shot but the location/setting is still focused on.
Mid shot-- This shows the artist from his/her waist to head, and focuses mainly on the subject bu still giving an impression of the location/setting.
Medium close up-- This shot is half way between mid shot and a close up, showing the artist from chest to head.
Close up-- This shot shows the artist's face.
Extreme close-- This shows the artist's face extremely close.
We used  a very wide shot of sarene walking in the park, it showed the scenery of the grass, trees, and church.
The use of the medium and close up shots of sarene playing on the swings.

We used TWO base tracks:

  1. In the canal
  2. In the park (on the swings)

Task 12: Lip sync Preliminary


We produced a preliminary music video where we shot, edited and lip synced the first minute of XX-You got the love. We used medium shots, close ups, tracking shots and pan ins and used a variety of effects such as jump cuts, discontinuous editing and base tracks so our video would be edgy and catchy like a typical music video in the industry.

One direction got signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records, which then joint as a US deal with Columbia Records.
The sorts of artists that the label specialises in are:

They staged on the 3rd place. Their first song was- 'what makes you beautiful', they became really famous: 681,561,822 views.
It sold more than 130,000 copies on it's first week.

Advantages of being signed to a mainstream label:
  • The big labels will have many subsidiaries of other labels that they have bought out. This Horizontal Integration increasing the market share of a company within an industry. 
  • High quality records
  • Pro- advertising
  • Tours
Disadvantages of being signed to an independent label:
  • unlikely spending money front
  • unlikely recording in million dollar studios
  • unlikely to work with a world- renowned producer 
Disadvantages of being signed to a mainstream label:
  • When you sign onto a major label , they own you as an artist for the duration of the contract. They will have complete creative control over your music and image.
  • They will tell you when and where to be somewhere.
  • They will own your music forever 
I believe that having merchandise and ancillary products is really important, this would allow more brand awareness for the artist/band. More consumers would be interested in them, which it would create more sales and profit.

Lip sync tutorial

I created preliminary music video on Premierepro as my lip sync. To do this I had to insert the base track marking in my 'significant word' then marking the same 'significant words in the video clips. I then had to align all the clips so the words were in sync with the music. I then used the razor tool on every 4th beat to break up the video then deleted certain clips to use a variety of clips in the music video. The screenshot shows the final result.

Reflection on progress

I feel I am making good progress on my blog. I am keeping to deadlines and using a variety of technologies. To improve I feel i can use an even wider variety of technologies including vlogs to make my blog more interesting to look at. I intend to use these other forms of technologies in the planning section of my blog.

Again reinforces genre stereotypes and use of costume.
 Luxury house, inside luxury cars, by the pool.
All locations showing luxury again following the stereotype of a hip hop music video.



Mainstream vs Independent

One Direction is an example of a mainstream artist.
They are signed to Syco Music which is owned by Simon Cowell. Artists such as Labrinth, Olly Murs and Leona Lewis are also signed to this record.
The target audience for One direction  is young females ranging from tweens to females in their late teens.
The band produce a lot of merchandise including clothing, perfumes and posters. Music is available on iTunes and also available for streaming on YouTube.
Each member of the band individually auditioned for talent show (X factor) but did not make it through as solo artists.Simon Cowell then put them together as a band and they went on to be a worldwide sensation.


Lanterns on the Lake are an independently  signed indie rock band.
They are signed to Bella \Union founded by Simon Raymonde> Artists such as Beach House and Fleet Foxes.
Lanterns on the Lake has significantly less media representation and a much smaller fanbase and recognition than the mainstream artists, this is due to lack of money and smaller audience.





Independent label


  • More leeway and freedom when producing music
  • Artists get rights and larger percent of profits from their music 
Mainstream
  • More funds
  • More connections in terms of networking and marketing
  • Previous reputation gives the artist a ready made platform which independent artists do not get.

Costume:

There are only three costume changes throughout the duration of the video. Conveniently, these take place at the start, the middle and the end of the video

 
Setting:

There are 4 locations that are used throughout this music video
1) Her Ex partners wardrobe
2) Out on the street next to a car
3) In a car - a flash back of memories from when the character and her partner were together
4) A dark location which is only lit from the visuals of fire ( burning clothes)

* There is a striking contrast between light and dark. In what is seen as the present is lit very dark in comparison to when we are confronted with the flashbacks which start to create the back story of the song and the meaning to the lyrics

The costumes for this music video is quite conventional in the way that it suits the genre type. Throughout the duration of the video the artists are seen wearing casual tracksuits or just hoodies

The whole video is set within an estate however as the audience watch the video we see different parts/areas to the estate which include
- The entrance to the flats
- In the flats
- On the road in the car

* all scenes are set in the dark, no/ hardly any colour
